Abstract
Description
Background. Obesogenic environments promote obesity through high-calorie intake and physical inactivity, influenced by cultural factors. The ANGELO Framework, designed to identify modifiable environmental factors associated with obesity, could be a suitable approach for adolescents. Aim. The aim of this work was to apply the ANGELO Framework in a Mexican public secondary school and determine whether it influences BMI categories and percentiles, diet, physical activity, and screen time. Methods. A community-based intervention using the ANGELO Framework was conducted. The study is a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design. Activities included nutrition workshops, active breaks, and a water bottle roll call. Outcomes measured were BMI percentile, frequency of food and water consumption, social support, physical activity, and screen time. Pre-and post-intervention comparisons were used. Results. The final sample comprised 313 adolescents. Significant improvements included a decrease in BMI percentile, lower proportions of obesity and morbid obesity, increased natural water consumption (regular consumers: 31.6% to 55%), reduction in snack and sweets intake, greater participation in sports and more active days, and enhanced social support (p<0.001), despite peer and family sabotage behaviors. Screen time did not decrease. Conclusion. The ANGELO Framework proved feasible and effective in a Mexican school setting, yielding positive changes in hydration, snacking, physical activity, social support, and anthropometric measures. Replication in diverse settings is recomended.
